3 Summer Phases

Veterans Memorial STEM Academy, a historic elementary school in Reno, NV, required major seismic upgrades to ensure student and staff safety. Originally built in 1949, the building’s Art Deco/Moderne-style architecture made it a significant local landmark, but its structural integrity was no longer up to modern seismic standards.

Key challenges included:

  • Aging Infrastructure: The building required a full seismic retrofit while preserving its historic integrity.
  • Tight Timelines: The project had to be executed in phased summer work to minimize disruption during the school year.
  • Uncertain As-Builts: Existing documentation was incomplete, requiring careful on-site adjustments.

The Strategy

Reyman Brothers Construction collaborated with the owner and design team to a develop a phased seismic retrofit plan to upgrade the school while maintaining its historic character.

Phase 1: Pre-Construction & Planning

  • Revisited structural analysis to assess reinforcement needs.
  • Created a phased schedule to complete work during summers.
  • Procured materials and finalized seismic bracing and structural reinforcement designs.

Phase 2: Seismic Retrofit Execution

  • Full Roof Strip & Reinforcement: Installed a new structurally reinforced roof for seismic stability.
  • Steel & Structural Modifications: Added trench openings, framing reinforcements, and steel connections to strengthen load-bearing elements.
  • HVAC & Electrical Upgrades: Installed modern mechanical systems to improve school functionality.

Phase 3: Historic Preservation & Finishing Touches

  • Integrated modern structural solutions while maintaining the building’s Moderne-style façade.

Conducted final safety inspections and testing to meet Reno’s updated seismic codes.

The Solution

Reyman Brothers Construction modernized the historic Veterans Memorial STEM Academy while preserving its architectural significance.

  • Improved seismic resilience to withstand potential earthquakes in Northern Nevada.

Upgraded HVAC and electrical systems for effectiveness and longevity.

The Results

The retrofit was substantially completed a little over three summers, allowing uninterrupted school operations while making the building safer for future generations.

Key Benefits:

  • A seismically sound and historically preserved educational facility.
  • Increased energy efficiency with new HVAC and electrical upgrades.
  • Opened the door for future interior remodels and enhancements.
